This is one of the most beautiful songs ever, in my opinion. I really like the line about people coming with flowers to throw themselves into the sea just because of a haunting voice from the ocean (although that is a bit morbid). Given the title of the song, it's presumably a mermaid singing, but the album this song is on is called Siren. I assume the various legends of the sirens who lured sailors to their death with their voices are relevant, too.

This song also appeared on the album Switched-on Lotus, so presumably Mr. Hirasawa felt it was a fitting tribute to his friends who passed away. Since many of those friends were entertainers, it wouldn't be surprising if one of them had an enchanting voice like that of a siren...

Maybe the Thai intro to the Switched-on Lotus version of the song offers more insight, but I don't speak Thai. :/ EDIT: However, I just noticed that someone here described what's being said in the intro to this version of "Mermaid Song": the names of the women who passed away and a message that they are gone and will be missed. Wow. And then to follow that with this song...wow...

平沢進 - "Mermaid Song"

Hirasawa Susumu - "Mermaid Song"

In a familiar town I've dreamed of a hundred times  People come to a halt
There's a sound, in the very depths of the ocean  You are calling faintly
Crying with a voice that was once known to us
Dwelling within a temporary song

Even the birds flying high in the sky won't tell  The tower rattles in the wind*
Even higher in the ancient sky  Even now you are calling
Crying with a voice that was once known to us
Dwelling within a temporary song

With a flower in your hand, come, oh Human!  Let us drown ourselves in that voice
On a windy day, I will take a boat out to sea  Just like an aged sailor

Crying with a voice that was once known to us
Dwelling within a temporary song

With a flower in your hand, come, oh Human!  Let us drown ourselves in that voice
On a windy day, I will take a boat out to sea  Just like an aged sailor
With a flower in your hand, come, oh Human!  Let us drown ourselves in that voice
On a windy day, I will take a boat out to sea  Just like an aged sailor

*To be honest, I have no idea what to do with this line, so this is the best you can get from me right now. Sorry!

An acquaintance of mine also says this song describes how Hirasawa fans respond to Hirasawa's singing--everything stops and we would like to drown ourselves in his voice. Ahem. Well. That is certainly another possible interpretation of this.
