As you probably know, Mr. Hirasawa prefers a healthy, vegetarian diet. He tweets about food a lot, too.

First, let's find out WHY he's a vegetarian:

28 Nov 2009:

There are people who, in response to my eating habits, comment: 'Health nut!' or 'Do you really want to live long so badly?' Unfortunately, they are wrong. There are three reasons for my humble diet. Reason 1: I like deceiving people but hate being deceived myself. I don't want part of my bodily functions to become restricted or destroyed as a consequence of such deception. Reason 2: If I ruin my health, just how many people will be unable to make a living? Reason 3: At any rate, meat is unappetizing and gross. Eating meat makes me tired and makes me throw up.

Those are all good reasons for trying to eat healthy! His distaste for most modern food is clear when he makes comments like this:

11 Nov 2009

Completed gorgeous lunch full of thick polysaccharides, protein hydrolysate, multicolored artificial colorings, etc. at a restaurant with a view of Mt. Tsukuba while watching a dolphin show. Now off to resume working.

Yes, that sure sounds unappetizing.

Mr. Hirasawa also has his own terminology for his meals (naturally), such as 高品位粗食, which I will translate as "High-quality Simple Meal."

8 Dec 2009

High-quality Simple Meal 1.0 has a semicircular bagel (half a bagel) as its basis. Version 2.0 is typically a bowl filled 50-60% with organic unpolished brown rice. These are called "scum" or "dregs," but there was a period when they were referred to as "bird food," which was a little bit better. Recently a version 3.0 has also appeared. This one is based on brown rice produced in 9 Thai granaries as part of a project promoted by the queen of Thailand (or so I'm told). I am sorry to have troubled you with such uninteresting topics.

So 1.0 = bagel breakfast. 2.0 = rice. 3.0 = Thai rice. Okay. Got it. But wait, there's more:

16 Dec 2009
Time for Simple Meal 1.0-Pro. When '-pro' is attached, it means there's the additional option of having a snack made from various fruits, something like what ninjas used to carry with them. It's made in Taiwan.

1 Jan 2010
My New Year's "dregs" are a High-quality Simple Meal (New Year's Edition), which is mainly organic brown rice mochi cake. Since it's New Year's, it gets dark outside really quickly while I'm making my way through my work.

How do other people react to Mr. Hirasawa's eating habits?

3 Jan 2010

"It's no fun eating with you," said a Malaysian friend of mine. That opinion is correct. However, there are some people who find value in having a meal with me: old men with diabetes and SP-2s striving for a wholesome meal while on a strict diet.

Now in case you're not bored yet, here is a short selection of various meal-related tweets:

I suspect one reason he loves Thailand is the food, though:

Oh man, that sounds delicious...

Incidentally, he also seems to like herbal tisanes, especially ginger tea (which is really yummy and quite invigorating!). Not sure if he drinks regular tea, as I haven't found any tweets about it yet, haha.

Notice: Today I have had only one cup of ginger tea so far.

At any rate, for a while there he was reporting quite regularly about what he was eating and drinking. Keep this in mind, because in a future post you will see how he then uses this fact to play mindgames with his readers... ;)

Half a bagel and fruit juice for lunch? That's more like a snack. Anyhow, Hirasawa seems very fond of ginger tea. I'm not the biggest fan of tea, but I'd like to try it. I'll check the grocery store today.

Didn't see it. I will try another store. =\

Aww. If you don't mind shopping online, I can highly recommend Upton Tea's Organic Ginger Root--it's my favorite pure ginger tea. I like this tea company because you can get a sample pack of most of their teas for only $1-2 each (and each sample is enough for a few cups of tea), and the ginger tea is loose so you can make it as strong or as weak as you like, no problem. :)

(And no, I don't work for them--I just love tea!)

Ginger tea is about the easiest thing in the world to make. Just buy some ginger root, cut it into chunks and boil it for 10 min or more. Add honey and/or lemon for extra flavor.

Thanks, you two! I will check a drug store for ginger root before I order from the site.

Tea is great stuff! Relaxes you. Here in the UK we drink loads of it, but mainly brown tea with milk. I'm a bit iffy on the herbal/non-milky kind, I've never tried ginger tea but Japanese green tea is nice :)

Ah, another tea fan! I love the stuff, in all its varieties. :)

Yes, he's a very strict vegetarian! *u* and look at him, so healthy <3

I also heard from a japanese fan friend of mine that once, when he was in the plane in way to Thailand, when it was lunch time they give him a soup of snails, almost alive, and he was all grossed out from it and asked to the flight attendant if it was possible to change the dish. Aawww <3

Also, about his comment on "being tired of eating meat", if i'm not mistaken I also saw once he tweet'd about having a problem on his jaw, and talked about that disease and so... now I see that's just other reason on why he can't stand meat... anyway

very interesting translations! thank you very much!! (:(:

LOL yes, the snail story made it onto Twitter, too! I don't recall anything about his jaw, but I'm still working my way through allll his old entries. Will keep an eye out for that story, then.

And thanks for reading! :)

I actually never actually knew he was a vegetarian, but I did suspect it. Somehow I feel that reason 3 was the original reason he ever started eating a vegetarian diet - I know if something made me sick to eat I wouldn't either. And then the other reasons probably come secondary, because you can still have tons of artificial stuff in food without meat.

Alas, I wouldn't want him to serve my lunch. I can't really even stand to eat most fruits and vegetables for one. (Actually I'm a picky eater in general but this is one way it really shows up) I can't help but imagine P-MODEL -well who knows how long he's followed this diet but I imagine a while- together at lunch to eat, and they're eating stuff maybe like sub sandwiches or burgers except for him, heheh.

You know, I've never had ginger tea, since you guys are talking about it. I mean, the ginger flavor itself isn't so bad. But tea.....man oh man, I hate tea. Tea made with tea leaves that is. I've had chamomile and I can drink that (and I swear I nearly got high off the stuff the first time somehow), but only when it's warm and it still doesn't taste very good - like grass. A quick gulp down without having to taste much of it, but it is kind of relaxing. I imagine ginger tea might be somewhat invigorating? A combo Chamomile/Anise tea is the only herbal tea I've had.

I can't say that it's not a healthy diet though, because it really, really is. And I think reducing the artificial stuff is good and probably something anybody can do without really changing their diet. But his diet is definitely something working for him and enjoyable for him at the same time. He seems to be making up for any nutrients he misses by not having animal content really well, even as he doesn't seem to eat much (a half bagel?) Always another thing astonishing about him, isn't there?

Ginger tea is indeed invigorating! It's a good way to wake yourself up if you don't/can't drink caffeine. :)

And yes, his diet seems quite healthy--not too many highly processed things, lots of natural ingredients.

And whoops, that comment posted before I was done typing.

All I meant to add though was heartfelt agreement about how astonishing he is. :D

Haha, I'll reply to this one then.

Maybe I should try ginger tea sometime then, caffeine has the amazing ability not to affect how wakeful I feel anyway (meaning I drink the kinds of coffee that I like for the taste only, for example), leaving me to wing it when I'm having to drag myself out of bed sometimes, haha.

I know where I could get some too, there's a health food store right nearby with like a zillion kinds of herbal teas and every other kind of health food sort of thing you could think of. I imagine Hirasawa would shop at that type of place.

One question though, how does it actually taste? I like ginger snaps but not ginger ale and don't know much about how other ginger things taste. And I hope it can't cause nervousness either, am rather prone to that (but yet if caffiene doesn't mess with me there...who knows).

(yay me being influenced by Hirasawa's diet? at least it's a healthy one!)

I'd say it tastes more like ginger snaps, not ginger ale. It has a very strong flavor, though--kind of spicy, but not the pepper spicy, more like a cinnamony spiciness, if that makes sense. Honey can make it less intense and sweet, while lemon gives it even more of a zing, and if you steep it more or less you can change the flavor, too, obviously. Might be fun to play with sometime. :)

Ah, that doesn't sound too bad. I quite like cinnamon-like qualities. Not sure I'd put honey in though, though I've only tried it with the non-sweet and non-spicy chamomille+anise mix and didn't like that combo. So yes, I'll keep my eye out for it.

I can't say I've given Hirasawa's eating habits any thought but this is pretty fascinating. Never knew he was a vegetarian. And good lord, his meals are so sparse. If only I had his amount self restraint, sigh.

Aaaah, all this talk of tea. Jonesing for some now.

It is always tea time, isn't it? Mmm.

For a while there all he seriously posted about was "High-Quality Simple Meal 1.0" or whatever, which sounds mysterious enough to MAKE me interested in his diet. Oh Hirasawa. So weird.♥

I had this lying around.

HAH that forceful gulp is the cutest thing ever. XD
